PiCAT study guide: what to study first
Study the four AFQT subtests first: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. Those four alone decide whether an applicant may enlist.
The remaining six subtests affect job qualification only, through branch composites. They still matter, but they answer a different question.
Priority 1: the four AFQT subtests
| Code | Subtest | Role |
|---|---|---|
| AR | Arithmetic Reasoning | Part of AFQT |
| WK | Word Knowledge | Builds VE for AFQT |
| PC | Paragraph Comprehension | Builds VE for AFQT |
| MK | Mathematics Knowledge | Part of AFQT |
The formula is AFQT = 2·VE + AR + MK, where VE is built from WK and PC. AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99 against a reference group of 18-to-23-year-olds who took the ASVAB in a 1997 norming study.
Priority 2: job-qualification subtests
General Science, Electronics Information, Auto Information, Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, and Assembling Objects affect job qualification only, through branch composites.
Auto Information and Shop Information are administered separately but reported as one combined AS score.
Study in administration order
The ten subtests are administered in this order:
- GS — General Science
- AR — Arithmetic Reasoning
- WK — Word Knowledge
- PC — Paragraph Comprehension
- MK — Mathematics Knowledge
- EI — Electronics Information
- AI — Auto Information
- SI — Shop Information
- MC — Mechanical Comprehension
- AO — Assembling Objects
The PiCAT is untimed and adaptive, so item difficulty tracks the candidate’s ability.
Use one full form to find the next priority
PicatDrill’s free simulator form contains 135 original items across all ten subtests. That is the simulator form length and the published CAT-ASVAB scored-item count; the Department of Defense says only that the PiCAT has a similar number of questions.
The form is free with a free account; no card is needed. After the form, use the per-subtest counts to choose the next study priority. Paid access adds additional forms, an AFQT-equivalent estimate with branch lines, per-subtest diagnostics, and the Verification Test rehearsal.
Prepare for verification as a separate step
The PiCAT does not become the official ASVAB score of record until verification succeeds. The Vtest is proctored at a MEPS or MET site and must be taken within 45 days of the PiCAT.
Read the Verification Test guide.
Understand the test relationship
The PiCAT is the unproctored version of the CAT-ASVAB, not a practice test. The differences in timing, tryout items, proctoring, early stopping, and verification matter.
